What is Paddle Boarding?

Paddle boarding is considered a water sport and there are two common forms of this sport.

Traditional or Kneeling Paddle Boarding is where the participants lay down or kneel on the board and propel themselves by using their arms in a swimming motion.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is a relatively new alternative form of the sport where the participants stand up on a board which is similar to a surf board. The participant propels the board across the top of the water using a long single-bladed paddle.

Paddle Boarding provides a whole body workout and is a great way to have fun and work the upper torso as well as the core muscles. It is quickly becoming a favorite cross-training activity for many athletes.

 

Things to do on Tybee Island - Paddle Boarding

Tybee provides an excellent location for any degree of Paddle Boarder, from beginner to expert. With minimal equipment (Paddleboard, Paddle and Floatation Device), you can paddle board on a river or in the ocean surf; waves are not required to enjoy this sport. Tybee offers the calmer waters of the Savannah and Wilmington Rivers for the beginner and the ocean surf for the intermediate and expert boarders.

If you want to paddleboard while visiting Tybee but don’t have your own equipment, it’s not a problem. There are several places on the island you can rent paddleboards by the hour, half day or full day. Some of the shops also can provide instruction for the first time paddle boarder and also offer tour packages. If you need something to do while visiting Tybee, rent a paddle board for the day, have some fun and see the island from a new perspective.
